While this wasn’t our first interview with this legendary producer, this was by far the most entertaining one (read the last one here). Directly after his set at Ultra, we sat down with the still sweaty Chris Lake, who pretty much lead his own interview, making our job quite easy. Read below to find out about his favorite restaurant, his “love” for hip-hop, and his upcoming album.
Swaager: So talk about your performance today, what was that like? Lake: It was a little bit nuts wasn’t it?
It was pretty awesome, how did it feel performing outside like that? Um, beyond sweaty and very uncomfortable having your clothes stick to you like you’ve been swimming in the ocean fully clothed. But it was amazing. There’s a hell of a vibe here, it’s quite unique. You know, you don’t really get this regularly with that much energy. You have great shows you know, and great energy with regular shows but…you know playing for an hour with that amount of energy ramped up to 100% the whole time, it was pretty special…and it was pretty special having guest performances by some singers that are featured on my album and the reactions to the vocals again were very, very special because no one really knew the records. It was great to see the reaction of the audience.
Sounds like a good time. It is a good time because if everyone had sat there and hated it I would have been gutted! I probably would have gotten really mad and gotten in the car and started punching people.
Well good thing everyone loved it. I was joking.
Where is your favorite place to perform in the States? Well, you saw the reaction. It’s kind of difficult to see beyond this; it was very, very cool. As a whole, I’ve really enjoyed playing in America; the scene right now it really fresh and it’s very invigorating. It’s kind of ironic and strange you know because dance music originated in America in the 70’s or 80’s in Chicago you know, and then virtually disappeared under the pressure of hip-hop and R&B. Now us sweaty t-shirt type of DJs have overcome the place of hip-hop, stuck up our middle finger and said, “Fuck you, fuck your bling!” and brought our own repetitive, monotonous, bullshit beats to the masses…we’re not going anywhere for years.
Is there hip-hop you do enjoy? Nope.
Not at all? Nope. It’s really crap….No I’m only joking, I like old hip-hop. It’s just when I hear new hip-hop where they are talking about their hoes, their bitches, their bling…you know, just talking about possessions and talking about bullshit like their guns and ego and just…superficial bullshit. That music can go fuck off to the rubbish bin. I hate that shit, I’m really glad it’s disappearing. So now we are introducing really monotonous dance music [laugh].
What kind of music do you like listening to? I really enjoy, on a personal level, I like down tempo music. I really enjoy some of the French music like Air; all of their albums really just inspire me. Their music is just beautiful and it’s got a mass appeal without being in any way, shape, or form, cheesy. It’s really impressive and anytime they make an album I listen to it, and I really feel very small and insignificant as an artist. You listen to it and I’m like, “I wish and I dream I could make music like that.” Artists like that are amazing, I also really like trip-hop which is know is more of an outdated type of music but I really do enjoy it and think its interesting. Artist like Amon Tobin.
We just saw him pretty recently! He’s amazing! That music is just such a balance. If you’re going to compare dance music with music like that, dance music is generally quite shit and Amon Tobin is truly amazing. But there aren’t many artists that make music like that so it’s very, very cool. I’m talking too much, we gotta move on.
No we like you talking! But I’m getting a bit controversial [laughs].
Do you have any upcoming projects coming up that you are really excited about? I do! I do, so I’m going to talk about them. I have an album that I’m working on, it’s nearly finished. I’ve been working with various artists, I’ve been working with Lazy Rich who is a fellow Brit living in Canada, I’ve done a track with him called “Stand Alone,” which is my next single. I’ve also done a record called “Helium,” which will probably be released by the end of the summer and I’ve done records with Thundertrash, who is a fantastic Australian DJ/producer. I’ve done some songs with my wife, which is very handy; she’s probably one of the most talented people on this planet. That’s why I put a ring on it; lock her down ha ha. She sung on my last single called “Sundown,” and she sung on another recent single of mine called, “Build Up.” I’ve also done a song with Benji Madden from Good Charlotte, he rocks, and he really is amazing. Who else have I done songs with?
Well you’ve just answered three of my questions in one answer. It’s almost like I’ve done it before!
Do you live in the UK? Yes but I’ve invaded your country.
We’ll keep you. Yes, I’ve come here to sample all your fine foods.
Where are your favorite places to eat? There’s this place, it’s my hands down favorite place and it’s this little place right by my gym and it’s called Veggie Grille. I love it. It’s very weird because it’s all vegetarian food and I don’t tell my friends who I take there that it’s all vegetarian. So when they get there, they think they are going to have the worst meal ever but then the food tastes so good it doesn’t matter. And it’s really cheap, really laid back and I eat there all the time. Where do you live?
Well we live in Denver but I’m actually from Dallas. I really like Denver as well; it’s really cool. Really good clubs and I like the people as well.
Well you should definitely come back there. I’ll have to look at my schedule but I think I’m coming back to Denver in May.
So will you be playing any of your new releases when you come in May? I will.
Good, can’t wait to hear them. I’ll probably drag you along as well.
Oh good, Denver is a fun city, tons of good restaurants. Definitely and I quite like this one hotel, the [Hotel] Teatro? Great beds! I think they have the most comfortable beds in the world!
