The New York City EDM scene has been buzzing about Cosmic Opera since the dance-music concert series was announced in January. Determined to transform the electronic-dance concert experience into a theatrical event, concert organizer, Justin Cohen, developed the dramatic and unique music series. Each show in the series is created to deliver another chapter to a three-part story. Axwell kicked off Part one last night as headliner of the show, which also featured NO_ID and Deniz Koyu.
Following Swedish House Mafia's blowout concert in December at MSG, Axwell met the crowd’s high expectations with a killer show last night. Die-hard EDM and Axwell fans packed Hammerstein Ballroom last night, eager to take part in a performance unparalleled by any other in the music vein. Opera singers and classical dancers performed under a canopy of lasers, while the beats dropped by a world-renowned DJ took center stage. Axwell vibed off of the energy-stricken venue that pulsed throughout the crowd with a set lasting more than two hours.
Self-described as an “extrasensory dance event series combining the cast and high-value production of a renaissance or opera spectacle with an over-the-top dance music concert,” Cosmic Opera delivered to its attendees. A singer transcended from a balcony directly to the stage while belting an operatic melody at the top of her lungs, and dancers floated from stage to dance floor to chat and mingle with the crowd.
Tonight marks night two of the series. The sold-out gig will once again feature Axwell, along with German DJ/producer Thomas Gold. Additional Cosmic Opera concerts are in the works, but no dates have been confirmed at this time.
