Callie Lardas

Callie Lardas lives for the funk. If she isn't daydreaming through class at CU Boulder or working as a PR intern at The Outdoor Industry Association, she is most likely blowing off the real world to snowboard, rock climb, hike, swim, dance or play in the sunshine. If you don't like kittens, oysters, disco balls, awkward tan lines, dancing like a grandma, two martini lunches, cut copy, hot yoga, copious amounts of chocolate chip cookies, laughing uncontrollably, and raging the 2-5 AM time slot (yes, in that order), you probably wouldn't get along. But hey, if you'd like to try, next time you see her out and about in the Denver/Boulder area, buy her a Paloma and she might just decide to keep you around forever.

The Crowd

Danny Brown, Schoolboy Q and ASAP Rocky packed the house like a can of sardines and effortlessly sold-out the Ogden on a Monday night, something I was not at all surprised by until I got there and saw how many young faces there were in the crowd (do parents not care about school nights anymore? When I was your age…oh never mind). But on a more serious note, in terms audience demographics, I was absolutely loving the fact that so many different people of different ages, racial backgrounds, ethnicities, and overall styles were just so stoked to be there, getting RATCHET to some grade A hip-hop, side by side. I think that Schoolboy Q and ASAP verbalized the whole experience quite nicely when they closed each of their respective sets with “F*ck your ethnicity, music brought you here tonight” and “We’re all just purple people at heart.” Amen boys, I’ll spark one up to that.

The Show

I just can’t help but wax poetic about how much fun this show was. Putting larger-than-life east coast personalities like Danny Brown and the ASAP crew in the same environment with self proclaimed “black hippy” (and visually confirmed judging by the amount of tie-dye the Q crew was rocking on stage) west coast newcomer Schoolboy Q was like opening up some very smoky Pandora’s (hot)box. There wasn’t a dull moment the whole night. From blunts and Patron on stage, to crowd surfing, gas-masks, upside down American Flags, and a ton of audience interaction and engagement I think it’s safe to say everyone got their money’s worth that night and headed home more than satisfied despite the Ogden’s strictly enforced 12:00 AM curfew on week nights.

A Public Service Announcement about Danny Brown

If you don’t know who Danny Brown is, you should probably crawl out from under whatever rock you’ve been living under because he is the future of hip-hop, proven by his recent signing with A-Track’s record label Fool’s Gold. He really embodies a complete 180 change from the traditional “rapper image” we have gotten so used to. I mean, I’m pretty sure the guy wears Jeremy Scott shoes when he goes to bed at night and rocks leather pants tighter than mine without ever thinking twice about it. But just promise me you’ll check him out for yourself okay?

FYI

My new favorite game to play at the Ogden is “Which Denver Nuggets players are renting out the bottle service section tonight?” (Yes, the Ogden has apparently had bottle service for the past couple months, who knew?) I’ve only ever seen the bottle service open at hip-hop shows so far, but that’s probably because only true OG’s can afford to ball out that hard on a Monday night. BTW our speculations were that Nuggets forward Wilson Chandler was sitting incognito at the best bottle service table at ASAP so next time, be on the lookout kids because you just might run into someone famous next time you’re there!

PS

If you missed out on Danny Brown and Schoolboy Q this time around, don’t worry because they just announced they will be returning to our fine state on November 1st to play CU Program Council’s Homecoming Concert. Tickets go on sale Thursday October 18th at 10:00 am and the show is open to all, so get on it because this show WILL sell out…See you there kids!
