Noam Silkoff

Noam is your typical wandering Jew. Born in Israel, lived in Toronto, now residing in downtown Denver, and holds UK, Israeli and American citizenships. His family boasts many musical talents which he apparently missed out on. He is a fan of all different types of music ranging from reggae to hip-hop, classic rock, and of course, EDM. After capturing his wild adventures of going to shows with a shitty point and shoot camera, he decided to start a music website, which somehow led to Swaager. His drinks of choice include Jameson and PBR and if you see him out without a v-neck on, he must be having an off-night. He enjoys nothing more than being at a show - it includes anything and everything you could ever ask for: music, girls, and booze. Follow Noam on Twitter: @volecule

Swaager's favorite LoHi boutique, Goldyn, will kick off its new concert series, The Goldyn Sessions, this Friday. Westword's Best High-Style Boutique, Goldyn will transform its trendy shopping space into an intimate music venue for the night. Friday's event will feature Hearts in Space, an up-and-coming local psychedelic rock foursome known for their haunting sound and video art. Best of all? The event is FREE.

Concert goers will also have the opportunity to browse and shop Goldyn's well-edited selection of "iconic brands and emerging designers" for women such as: Helmut Lang, Loeffler Randall and Rebecca Minkoff.

Swaager caught up with Goldyn's owner and local music supporter, Vanessa Barcus, about her vision for The Goldyn Sessions. Check out our interview with her below.

SWAAGER: What gave you the idea to host live shows at Goldyn? VANESSA: Honestly it just felt like a natural thing to do.... everyone at Goldyn is super into music, and most of us have friends in local bands.  In our opinion, fashion and music go hand-in-hand really.  We thought it would be fun for everyone to offer a free concert to our customers, and at the same time help give exposure to these amazing up-and-coming local bands.

Do you think having shows in LoHi provides an added appeal? Definitely. There aren't any big venues up here yet, but it's such a hotspot for nightlife, dining, shopping, etc. We've got quite a bit of space here at the store, so we figured why not turn the store into a venue of sorts? This neighborhood is full of fun-loving, creative people who are looking for that kind of thing to do. Our goal is to have the shop be a cultural hub for the community, so this is one way to offer that.

What can show-goers expect at The Goldyn Sessions? Can they shop while they listen? While I'm sure the vibe of each show will vary depending on which band is playing, in general it's meant to be a low-key, social event where you can listen to great local music and at the same time shop and hang out with friends. Moving forward you can also expect to find art openings going on at the same time as well. We're always keeping events fresh and exciting.

Why did you choose Hearts in Space to kick off The Goldyn Sessions? Well, personally I love psychedelic rock, and I think these guys really have talent. We thought this would be a perfect opportunity to help spotlight them. Plus their brand of rock and roll is one that I think is pretty accessible to a wide range of people, which makes it a good one to kick things off with.

Who else do you have lined up to play The Goldyn Sessions? Our next show will be our big Anniversary Party with a DJ set by Pictureplane in late April.  We can't wait!

Who are some of your favorite local bands/artists/DJs?
There are so many great local acts, it's hard to even say! I've been a big fan for several years of groups like Snake Rattle Rattle Snake, DJ duos London Dungeon and Double Shadow, as well as electronic one-man-wonder Pictureplane. Moonspeed, though they don't play together often, is incredible for atmospheric rock. Oh, and Courtney's (Goldyn's Director of PR and Marketing) husband is in a post punk/hardcore  band called the Accordion Crimes, who are fantastic as well. That pretty much tells you the span of my taste - a little bit of everything!

How do you think music relates to fashion? Are you only choosing bands who reflect Goldyn's aesthetic, or are you choosing bands you love? Fashion and music are incredibly intertwined...I know a lot of designers find inspiration for their collections through music, and likewise most musicians throughout history have used fashion to communicate the feel or mood of their band. Both play a lot off of what is going on in society as well, which makes it interesting to compare how fashion and music each reflect that.

Of course, the bands we've invited to play at the store have to stay appropriate for our audience, which runs a pretty wide gamut from college students to ladies who lunch. However I don't think we've compromised anything on quality or style for that reason. All of the bands who will be playing here are ones we truly love!
